ABOUT THIS HISTORIC LANDMARK HOME:

Built in 1882, the Jesse Benton Building was the first framed stick Eastlake two-story structure constructed in Ouray. What is currently the living room was orignially a bar with billiards. The space was then transitioned into a newsprint office. Since that time the first floor space was occupied with a variety of retail and commercial businesses, including "Silver Slugs" fire arms clubhouse, The Woman's Club of Ouray meeting room, Ouray Glass Works, a frame shop, Ouray Yoga and Mojo's Coffee.

The original owner and proprietor, Jesse Benton, served in the Civil War with Company First Colorado Calvary, 1862. After the war he became a private lawman hired by mountain mining towns to establish law and order. Benton organized the Ouray "Sharp Shooter's" and survived three decades of law enforcement in the San Juans.

Great vibes and comfortable home
We had a great time staying in this Airbnb. I think we were one of the first people staying there. It was very updated and clean.
It’s super close to all of the restaurants and shops right near Main Street.
It was really interesting to learn about the history of the building as well. We would stay here again.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! We’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed your stay, appreciated the updates and cleanliness, and loved the convenient location near Main Street. It’s great that you also got to enjoy a bit of the building’s history! We’d be happy to welcome you back anytime.

Great location
Great location just off main street. The house is lovely with everything you need. Nice, comfy king sized bed. There is no air conditioning, so we added a box fan in the window facing bedroom and that helped. My only complaint was that it is stated there is parking available. It is street parking so first come first served. Every afternoon we came back from being away, we had to park a block or two away from our house. So that was not ideal! Overall, a good place and location, just be aware of the parking situation.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback! We're so glad you enjoyed the house, the great location just off Main Street, and the comfort of the king-sized bed. We appreciate you noting the parking situation—while street parking is typically available, we understand it can be frustrating when spots fill up later in the day. We’ll take that into account and make sure future guests are aware. Thanks again for staying with us—we’d love to host you again!
