Sun-Soaked Destinations
3 Winter Getaways For Chasing The Sunshine

The winter season has fully enveloped much of the United States. For some vacationers, this means ski lodges, ice skating, and other winter activities. For others, however, it's time to leave the colder climates for a seasonal retreat towards warmer latitudes.

The ideal location for travelers seeking milder temperatures will include plenty of fun in the sun. Vacation Rental Collective wants to tell you about three of our favorite winter escapes!

1: Moab

The city of Moab lies in the middle of some of the world’s most incredible deserts and offers a lifetime of adventure. It is home to the astonishing Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, among other notable locations such as Dead Horse Point State Park.

Winter is a wonderful time to experience Moab; visitors will find the crowds from busier months absent. This adds to the town's charm and is especially pleasant while enjoying the natural serenity of the surrounding areas.

It is important to note that the city has a 4,000-foot elevation, and occasional storms can bring snow. However, with an average of only five days of snowfall per year, the winter in Moab is temperate and offers experiences unlike anywhere. Make sure to pack layers of clothing, including windproof clothes, so you’re prepared regardless of the weather.

Arches National Park, while stunning at any time of year, is uniquely breathtaking with a fresh blanket of snow. The red rocks, blue sky, and white snow are a must-see, and photographers will revel in the otherworldly beauty. Many of the area Parks and vistas offer the same grandeur and driving out of Moab presents more opportunities for breathtaking photography.

Stargazing is another fantastic thing to do in Moab. Although this means bundling up for a winter night excursion, it will be well worth it. There are three International Dark Sky Parks in the area, located at Arches and Canyonlands National Parks and Dead Horse State Park. Dress warm, bring hot beverages, and enjoy some of the most pristine night skies around.

Moab is known for its hiking and biking trails. Exploration during the winter months offers adventurers relief from the high temperatures that the area sees during the rest of the year. It’s still essential to be prepared with water, food, and sunscreen, so pack appropriately when venturing out on one of the area’s trails. Many trails are perfect for winter hiking and mountain biking, like the world-famous Slick Rock Bike Trail. Microspikes for hiking boots and tire studs can provide additional traction if needed.

2: Santa Fe

The city of Santa Fe is a one-of-a-kind hub for art and culture, affectionately known as The City Different. Initially founded in 1610 as the capital of the Spanish province that once controlled the region, Santa Fe is the oldest continuous capital city in the United States.

In the late 1800s, Santa Fe was bypassed by a significant railway, and the city felt the impact on its population and economy. Despite this, the city began transforming in 1912, becoming the cultural nucleus we know today. City leaders prioritized the area's historic and cultural elements, attracting artists, writers, and retirees who helped create many of the Santa Fe standards we now know, like the School of American Research and the Santa Fe Indian Market.

Today, visitors to The City Different will find a treasure trove of exciting and enriching experiences. There are a plethora of events, museums, galleries, restaurants, architecture, hiking, and more.
To appreciate some of the city’s deep artistic heritage, visit one of the city’s many museums. At the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, you can view works from one of the most important American visual artists of the 20th century. O’Keeffe spent many summers in New Mexico before making it her permanent home in 1949, drawing inspiration from its rich culture.

If you wish to go even further back in Santa Fe’s artistic history, visit the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, a premier repository of Native art and material culture, telling the story of the Southwest from prehistory to the modern era.

A great way to experience the modern Santa Fe art scene is at the Downtown First Friday Art Walk, held on the first Friday of each month.

To enjoy a seasonal celebration, check out the city’s event calendar. Here you can find information about the fantastic winter events and activities that the city hosts, such as the holiday Farolito Walk, the city’s NYE on the Plaza celebration, January’s WinterBrew beer festival, and the Santa Fe Film Festival in February.

Santa Fe also boasts a lively culinary scene, with restaurants of nearly every variety. Although Southwestern and New Mexican food is a regional staple, there are also Asian, French, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Italian restaurants, in addition to contemporary American cuisine. Pursue the Santa Fe Dining Guide to find the perfect match for your palette.

When it’s time to get out and enjoy the fresh air and some of the area’s natural beauty, you can explore miles of hiking trails around the city. There’s a wide range of options, from the trails that take you to ancient ruins to the more challenging Nambe Lake trail, which rises high into the alpine beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

This is only a sample of all there is to do in The City Different, and rest assured, you can find something for everyone. The city has several spas and hot springs resorts to rejuvenate the weary traveler, and there are numerous activities that the whole family can enjoy as well.

3: Fredericksburg

Located in the middle of Texas hill country lies the town of Fredericksburg. An area rich in culture and nature, Fredericksburg is an excellent winter destination due to its pleasant weather and endless options for adventure and entertainment. The average lows stay above freezing, and during the day, it is common to see temperatures rise into the 60s.

Founded in 1846, the town was originally home to numerous German-American citizens. This heritage can still be seen today in the names of city landmarks and in the outstanding German cuisine available at restaurants like the Auslander Restaurant and Biergarten, which combines excellent Bavarian food with another Fredericksburg passion, beer gardens.

The city has a wide variety of options for eating and drinking, from the Texas staple of BBQ to handmade tortillas accompanying authentic Mexican fare. There are several breweries and wineries to explore, with multiple tours available.

The surrounding countryside is as diverse in options as the city itself. In addition to the many wineries and orchards, you can explore the area of Enchanted Rock. A Texas State Natural Area, Enchanted Rock is 18 miles from the city and offers hiking, bird watching, and rock climbing.

The area is home to the country's largest family-owned wildflower seed farm, Wildseed Farms. You can walk amongst the flowers and gardens, see the expansive nursery, and peruse the gourmet food items and beers in the Brewbonnet Biergarten.

There are many unique celebrations that winter visitors can partake in, such as the Marktplatz New Years' Ball Drop. This family-friendly event takes place in the Marktplatz, a beautiful green space in the city’s historic center. The event features kid’s games, music, dancing, arts, crafts, and concludes with a ball drop.

Another unique Fredericksburg New Years' event is the Cross Mountain New Year’s Eve Hike. Held in the old German tradition of Volkssporting, this non-competitive walk is a great way to experience the community of Fredericksburg and get some exercise before the festivities commence.

Durango
Durango has been popular with vacationers for many years. A historic old west town, Durango residents organize various festive activities and celebrations to accentuate the seasonal charm. Here are some ways to spend your holiday vacation in this charming town.

Postcard History

Durango is also home to unique enterprises like Toast Records and Bakes, a bakery and record shop where you can enjoy handcrafted pastries while perusing your favorite vinyl.

Ouray

Seventy miles north of Durango lies the quaint town of Ouray, a National Historic District. One visit to this high-altitude heaven will tell you why it has been affectionately nicknamed the “Switzerland of America.” With towering cliffs, waterfalls, hot springs, and a downtown full of eateries, breweries, and more, Ouray is ideal for holiday celebrations. Don’t forget to stop by the historic Wright Opera House for a December 16th screening of the holiday classic, A Christmas Story.

Winter Festivities
Ouray Yule: From 9 am to 7 pm on December 3rd, the town of Ouray will celebrate its annual Yule day. The day’s schedule is packed with exciting, kid-friendly activities to make memories and bring smiles to the whole family. The event will kick off with the classic “Elf on the Shelf Scavenger Hunt” at 10 am, and contestants will have until 3 pm to search every corner of their event maps for the elusive elves.

In addition to fun activities like the scavenger hunt, an ugly Christmas sweater contest, and a children’s “s’mores and crafts” event, there will be a raffle, a dance performance by the Weehawken Dancers, and picture opportunities with Mrs. Claus, The Grinch, and Cindy Lou Who.

The community Christmas tree lighting will commence at dusk, followed by the Main Street Holiday Parade. After a chili supper at the Ouray Elks Lodge, celebrants will gather at the historic Wright Opera House for a cozy story time with Mrs. Claus.

Soaking with Santa: The town of Ouray is home to various unique attractions, and the historic Ouray Hot Springs is undoubtedly one of the most beloved. With 750,000 gallons of geothermally heated spring water, visitors can find ample relaxation and rejuvenation.

On December 17th, from 4p-6p, the Hot Springs will host the Soaking with Santa event. What could be better than enjoying the snowy mountains from the hot springs while taking photos with St Nick? Images are $5, and the proceeds benefit the Salvation Army Angel Tree program.

Ouray Ice Park
World Class Climbing: The Ouray Ice Park is an international destination. Since 1994, the park has been operated by the nonprofit organization Ouray Ice Park, Inc, and offers free access to the public. Every winter, climbers from all over the world come to enjoy the largest human-made ice climbing park in the world, stretching for two miles through the Uncompahgre Gorge.

Ice Fest and Competition: The Ouray Ice Park is supported by memberships, donations, sponsorships, and events. The most significant event of the year, the Ouray Ice Festival and Competition, will occur from January 19th-22nd. There will be clinics, gear demos, a silent auction, and the star of the show, the climbing competitions. Athletes will test their prowess on the ice in two events: the Elite Mixed Climbing Competition and the Speed Climbing Competition. Spectators will watch in awe as the best in the world vie for the top spot.

When you're finished with your exciting day of activities in Ouray or Durango, relax and let sore muscles evaporate with the rising steam from the area’s natural hot springs. Check out the Durango Hot Springs Resort or the Ouray Hot Springs for more information.

Our Favorite Fall Vacation Spots - Phoenix & Moab

Autumn has arrived, and with it, seasonably cooler temperatures. Now is the perfect time to visit these fall vacation hotspots for those who enjoy or are interested in desert destinations. The summer heat has abated, and travelers flock to the Southwest United States for recreation and relaxation. Vacation Rental Collective has selected some of our favorite things about our top desert vacation destinations, and we’re excited to share them with you!

Phoenix, Arizona

The capital of Arizona, Phoenix has had human settlements for hundreds of years, dating back to the inhabitants of the Pueblo Grande. As the story goes, the name Phoenix was suggested as a nod to the birth of a new city where an expansive ancient civilization once dwelled. Today, Phoenix is one of the largest cities in the United States, with pleasant winter temperatures, fantastic cuisine, diverse culture, and many attractions.

Festivals & Celebrations

The end of October brings some of the season’s most exciting celebrations, including Dia de los Muertos. Phoenix is sure to impress with its array of annual Dia festivities, including celebrations at the Desert Botanical Garden. Festival goers can experience music, art, costumes, food, dancing, activities for kids, candlelight processions, and much more. Visitors can also expect various Halloween celebrations all over Phoenix, from a silent showing of the original Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum Theater to multiple tours of the city’s haunted establishments.

Other seasonal celebrations include the inaugural Kierland Fine Art & Wine Festival during the end of October, the celebrated Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships on November 5th, and also on November 5th the Arizona Fall Festival. This festival promises to showcase everything Arizona with live music, beverages, food vendors, games, a silent auction, and much more.

Fine Cuisine

The Greater Phoenix area is loaded with fine and casual dining options, and foodies will rejoice at the variety of selections available. A window into the cultural diversity of the area, Phoenix has everything from relaxed sushi at Chef Hashimoto’s Hana Japanese Eatery to the sophisticated elegance of The Mission, which blends Spanish, Mexican, Central, and South American influences. There are also many breweries, distilleries, and wineries to sample.

The Sonoran Desert

The breathtaking beauty of the Sonoran desert that surrounds the city, with the towering mountains, is a wonderful place to explore during the cooler months of winter. There are several superb hikes for all ability levels in the area, with everything from mountain summits to petroglyph tours. If hopping in the water is your style, the Salt River has tubing, kayaking, wild horse viewing, and much more.

History & Science

To experience the 20th century, visit Heritage Square and the Rosson House Museum and Science Park. Another great stop for science lovers is the Odysea Aquarium, Arizona’s largest aquarium. To see the architecture and engineering skills of the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People, visit the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park. These ancient people are the original developers of the land, and their descendants still call the Phoenix area home.

Moab, Utah

Known worldwide for its proximity to some of the most amazing desert attractions anywhere, the quaint town of Moab has been a tourist destination for years. With a charming downtown lined with a variety of shops and restaurants, all within a short drive from thrilling sights and adventures, Moab is a dream getaway for desert vacations.

The Colorado River

The mighty Colorado River crosses through Moab on the far western edge of town and is both wild and natural while simultaneously accessible as a municipal recreation resource for Moab. Lion’s Park and the areas accessible from here are a natural gem that travelers of all ages and abilities can enjoy. Many trails, such as Grandstaff Canyon, start on the paved bike path. Paralleling the Colorado River for 5 miles round trip with only 40 feet of elevation change and fully wheelchair accessible, this can be a perfect way for anyone to enjoy the area's beauty without traveling out of town.

There are scenic places to enjoy along the river, such as the Big Bend Recreation Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. In Big Bend, you will find beaches, boat launches, and more. This is a perfect place to stop for a picnic, hike, swim in the river, or an exciting raft trip.

Canyonlands

Located about 40 minutes from downtown Moab, Canyonlands National Park is Utah’s largest national park and is famous for its expanse of natural beauty and stunning geology. Visited by people for over 10,000 years, it is a fascinating area full of history and beauty. Divided by the Colorado and Green rivers into three distinct districts, Canyonlands offers diverse adventure everywhere. While both The Needles and Island in the Sky districts are comparably accessible, The Maze district is the most remote and challenging to navigate, and high-clearance 4WD vehicles are required to travel The Maze’s remote roads.
Although Canyonlands is open year-round, some facilities and roads will close due to the season or weather. As there are few services in this stunning but isolated area, it is recommended that you bring what you need with you.

Arches

Only five miles north of Moab on US 191, the iconic Arches National Park is like visiting another world. Gravity, water, and time have all transformed this landscape into the area we enjoy today. Arches is a world-class destination with over 2,000 gravity-defying arches visitors can seek out and admire. The park is open to self-directed travel, although some areas require permits, and the NPS Rangers also offer guided programs. You’ll want to plan for at least a few hours to see some of the arches, and longer trips can provide access to areas that are a bit more off the beaten path.

Backpacking, climbing, canyoneering, and more are also available within Arches, but with Moab’s ever-growing popularity, it is recommended to plan ahead regarding reservations and permits.

The Southwestern United States is a treasure trove of fantastic winter travel destinations. Vacation Rental Collective is here to help facilitate your next adventure into the magic of the desert. We offer best-in-class accommodations and services in both Phoenix and Moab, so you can rest assured that you’ll find the perfect accommodations. The Southwest Colorado town of Ouray is known around the world for its incredible mountain location, nestled deep in the San Juan Mountains. Abundant adventure tourism is found throughout Ouray’s towering peaks, rugged cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and natural hot springs. This Colorado town is often referred to as the “Switzerland of America” and is a must-see destination for anyone wishing to experience the mountainous beauty of Southwest Colorado. Although there are a number of exciting adventures to find in Ouray, all of us here at Vacation Rental Services want to share one of our favorite ways to get off the beaten path and find adventure, the Ouray Via Ferrata

A via ferrata, Italian for “iron path”, is a type of climbing route that utilizes preplace aids such as cables, ladders, pegs, rungs, and even carved pathways to provide adventurers with protection and an easier way to progress along the route when compared to using only natural foot and handholds. As the climber progresses through the via ferrata, they clip leashes that are securely attached to their safety harness to the cables and other protection. By using multiple leashes, the climber is able to stay safely connected to the route the entire time. At no point should a via ferrata have unsafe or unprotected climbing and making progress along the route should always be safe when done correctly, making this an exhilarating and accessible option for a variety of adventure seekers!

Located in the stunning beauty of the Uncompahgre River Gorge, the Ouray Via Ferrata is one of only 10 such routes in North America and it is expected to be the United State’s first public via ferrata that is free of admissions charges and constructed to modern safety standards. Managed by the 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation Friends of the Ouray Via Ferrata, the area itself is under the ownership of the town of Ouray and the city government intends to operate it in the same manner as the world-famous Ouray Ice Park, renowned for the annual Ouray Ice Climbing Festival. Both of the routes available at the Ouray Via Ferrata, the original Downstream Route, and the newer Upstream option, are open for the 2022 season. Operating seven days a week from 8 am to 4 pm, each route has a variety of terrain to cover and will leave travelers with memories for a lifetime. The Downstream Route covers approximately 4,000 linear feet of terrain, including an airy bridge that crosses the Uncompahgre River. It is rated 4B on the Fletcher/Smith Italian Via Ferrata scale of difficulty. The more challenging Upstream Route, rated 4.5B on the scale, has 1,000 more feet of terrain to cover and utilizes fewer rungs and other manmade protection, so climbers will use natural features for their hands and feet as they make their way through the gorge. Both routes have been designed and constructed by experienced engineers, contractors, and local climbing professionals with intimate knowledge of the surrounding area.

For those with little or no experience climbing or using a via ferrata, guiding services are available and highly recommended. There are a number of such outfits in the area, and the Ouray Via Ferrata provides a list of their approved guiding services. These guides have the experience to keep travelers safe and will often share their knowledge of the area, offering adventures the opportunity to learn from local outdoor professionals. For those with the appropriate experience to venture out on their own, the Ouray Via Ferrata has the rules and guidelines listed on the official website

The town of Ouray itself has been a travel destination for many years and has excellent dining and entertainment options for a quaint mountain town of its size. When you’re finished traversing and ascending the steep terrain of the Uncompahgre River Gorge you can return to downtown and enjoy all that the Switzerland of America has to offer.

One of the top attractions of the area and a  perfect complement to the via ferrata are the numerous natural hot springs in the area. There are a wide variety of options to enjoy and some also offer massage and spa services. From the social and lively Ouray Hot Springs to the private and secluded historic Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa, there are settings for everyone. Whether you’re returning from a high-altitude journey on the Via Ferrata or waiting for the adventurers in your group to make their way back to town, the hot springs in Ouray are high on the list of things to enjoy while you are there.

Another Ouray must is a stop by the historic Wright Opera House. Originally constructed in 1888, it has since been adopted by the non-profit organization Friends of the Wright Opera House. Restored with a mission to make the Wright a center of Ouray culture and entertainment, the opera house is once again the premier entertainment venue in the area. There are numerous art shows, performances, lectures, movies, and even a trivia night. You can check the online schedule for events, dates, and times.

For those planning a trip to historic Ouray, Vacation Rental Services is excited to offer our clients the opportunity to enjoy the premier accommodations available at the breathtaking Red Mountain Alpine Lodge. Only 20 minutes south of downtown Ouray and 15 minutes north of Silverton, another renowned Colorado mountain town, the brand new timber frame lodge is ideally situated in the natural wonder and expanse of the San Juan mountains. With serene privacy and sitting at an elevation of 11,000 feet, the Red Mountian Alpine Lodge can sleep up to 18 guests and is the perfect Rocky Mountain retreat. Vacation Rental Services offers our customers premier accommodations and best-in-class services at acclaimed travel locations all over the United States. When it’s time to plan your next trip, whether it's adventure tourism on the Ouray Via Ferrata or something else, we encourage you to contact us for truly memorable lodging and outstanding customer service!

There’s an exciting new addition to the festival for 2022. Due to the growing popularity of the event, organizers have added a VIP day on Friday the 26th from 5p to 8p. With only 500 VIP tickets available, Friday will be a more intimate gathering with shorter lines. The VIP event will be held in Buckley Park near historic downtown Durango, the same location as the main festival happening the following day. All the merchant vendors from Friday will be there, selling their unique creations to the public. For entertainment, Saturday’s opening musical act will be local favorites The Crags, and the headliner is Warsaw Poland Bros. Nationally known for great live performances, multiple albums, and voted a Jam Base top ten touring band, Warsaw has been to Durango many times. They have accrued a loyal following and are sure to bring their trademark energy to the Brewfest stage, so there will be no shortage of dancing and good times.

Supporting a Great Cause

The San Juan Brewfest has been a proud supporter of United Way of Southwest Colorado since 2008. A regional powerhouse for community wellbeing, United Way of Southwest Colorado enriches communities by providing support in the areas of education, financial stability, and health. United Way’s origins began in Denver, Colorado, in 1887 when a small group of religious and community leaders collaborated to address issues surrounding their city’s welfare. Each year the San Juan Brewfest raises thousands of dollars to support United Way’s mission, and the mutual collaboration has generated increasing recognition and support over the years.

The Thirsty 13

For those who want to get in some exercise before imbibing, we recommend the Thirsty 13 half-marathon. Another local event held on Saturday the 27th, the Thirsty 13 is a 13.1-mile race that finishes at Ska Brewing. The official website describes the annual race as “beautiful, scenic, and fast” while also lauding the San Juan Brewfest as “the best post-race party ever.” For those interested in burning off some calories and seeing the sights before the Brewfest commences, there are more details, including registration information, on the race’s website.

A Trip to Remember in Bend, OR

The city of Bend is a fantastic summer vacation destination, with abundant waterways and mountains offering near endless opportunities to play in the sunshine. Now is a great time to explore this standout city, and Vacation Rental Collective is excited to share all the reasons why we think Bend could be your next great adventure!

Originally incorporated in 1905 as a logging town, the city of Bend has become one of Oregon’s jewels. Considered a gateway for a variety of outdoor sports such as mountain biking, skiing, rafting, and fishing. Bend is also a lively city with excellent dining, breweries, shopping, music, and more. From a beautiful downtown wrapped in history to the natural splendor of the area, Bend is a must-see for those wishing to experience the beauty and enjoyment Oregon has to offer.

The Deschutes River

Flowing through the city, the Deschutes River is the lifeblood of Bend. Originally vital for transportation for the logging industry, the river is now one of the most cherished aspects of Bend and the city has invested in making the river and surrounding locals a hotbed of recreation. You can walk the river trail through town or if you prefer a little more excitement, float down the river on an inner tube, paddleboard, or kayak. Here are some of the other great activities you can find while enjoying this historic waterway.

The Old Mill District

In the early 20th century, this area was home to two of the largest pine sawmills in the world. After being rejuvenated from industrial collapse in the early 2000s, the whole area has been transformed. Today, you can enjoy some of the best dining, shopping, art galleries, and entertainment that Bend has to offer, right on the edge of the Deschutes River. Catch an IMAX movie at the Regal Old Mill or, if you’re interested in fly fishing, you can grab a free class at the Old Mill District Fly Fishing and Casting Course. The annual Bend Brewfest, the second largest in the Northwest, is held in The Old Mill District, as is the First Friday Art Walk which takes place on the first Friday of each month.

Hayden Homes Amphitheater

Located in the Old Mill District, Hayden Homes Amphitheatre has been hosting world-class performances since 2002, all along the scenic banks of the Deschutes River. The venue will be host to many amazing performers this season including Alanis Morissette, Bonnie Rait, and the Foo Fighters.

Bend Whitewater Park

The Bend Whitewater Park is a state-of-the-art municipal whitewater park. The redevelopment of this area created three distinct channels, two of which are for water recreationists to enjoy. The Fish Ladder section offers a very limited amount of whitewater activity for floaters, while the Whitewater section is specifically designed with a series of waves for kayakers, surfers, and paddle-boarders. The third channel is designated for wildlife only and provides animals safe passage even during the busy summer months. The use of personal flotation devices on the water is a state law, but you can find free rentals at Tumelo Creek Kayak and Canoe.

Santa Fe Indian Market's 100th Year Anniversary

The year 2022 is full of excellent travel events and destinations, and Vacation Rental Collective is excited to get you out there to experience it all! This August, the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts and the Santa Fe Indian Market will be celebrating one hundred years of showcasing Native American art and culture to the world. The city of Santa Fe is certain to be teeming with excitement in August for this once in a lifetime experience. Creators and admirers of Native American art and culture, will want to attend this celebration guaranteed to impress. This will be a dream vacation for many.

Origin and History
Originally established as the Indian Fair by the Museum of New Mexico on September 4th, 1922, the event was initially an ethnological display held during the annual Santa Fe Fiesta celebration. The intent was to preserve and promote the original culture and diversity of Native American art and artists, as it had existed before being assimilated into the curio and souvenir shops of non-Native communities.

Simultaneously, the Indian Fair was educating both artists and admirers alike in the matters of market availability, authenticity, and fair pricing. Art could be purchased directly from the vendors. Individual pieces were assessed by judges and cash awards were given to the top pieces. The final Indian Fair, in 1931, was held in Santa Fe. A handful of years after, there were no official fairs, although smaller judged competitions still took place in various villages, Indian schools, and other locations.

After a brief hiatus in the early 1930s, the Indian Fair’s committee was officially brought under the umbrella of the New Mexico Association of Indian Affairs in 1934. Despite a continuation of local artist involvement, the Fair (now the Fiesta Indian Markets) slowly shrank in size over the following years. Fortunately, in the year 1959, a fortuitous sequence of events began. In an effort to more accurately reflect their involvement, the New Mexico Association on Indian Affairs changed its name to the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. In addition to this, the Indian Market would become the Association’s sole activity and a mission of cultural heritage preservation became the Market’s primary objective. Almost simultaneously, an interest in the Native American culture began to evolve on a national level, which would be a positive force for the Indian Market in the years to come.

Between 1970 and 2002, participation grew from 200 booths and their respective artists to 625 booths and 1,200 artists. The event has expanded to include multiple streets extending out from the original plaza location. This year, the region will benefit from an estimated 160 million dollars in revenue. On the eve of the Indian Market’s centennial celebration, the SWAIA’s mission of “bringing Native arts to the world by inspiring artistic excellence, fostering education, and creating meaningful partnerships” is continuing stronger than ever.

What to Expect
This year the Santa Fe Indian Market will be the biggest event in its history, and the city of Santa Fe is expecting over 100,000 visitors from all across the world for this historic moment. As the world’s premier showcase of Native American art, the festivities promise to be continuous and lively. Expect a dazzling display of bead work, sculptures, paintings, baskets, jewelry, and much more from many of the most acclaimed Native artisans.

The Market is also a renowned fashion event, with designers and models from all over North America participating in the Indigenous Fashion Show. There will be two shows this year, on Saturday and Sunday. Fashion show ticket holders will have the unique opportunity to buy and order directly from the designers during the Indigenous Trunk Show, which will take place on Sunday.

Continuing in the original spirit of the event, Market artists will be selling their wares directly to the public. This offers the patrons the chance to speak directly with artisans about their art, providing an opportunity to explore the depth of meaning behind these highly personal pieces.

Events officially kick off on August 17th with an invite-only artist reception, but the bulk of the festivities will begin later that week. On Friday, there will be the Best of Show ceremony and luncheon at the Santa Fe Convention Center. From that point on, the weekend will have nearly non-stop activity. The Market opens in the Santa Fe Plaza at 8 am and continues until 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Entertainment, including traditional music and dancing, will be on display in the Plaza from 9 am to 4 pm. In the evenings there will be auctions, the Indigenous fashion shows, and more. See the SWAIA’s schedule for a full list of events and times.

The official Market won’t be the only fun in town that weekend. Santa Fe is a world-class travel destination with a multitude of museums, hiking trails, schools, golf courses, parks, and more. The entire town will be bustling with activity, so there will be gallery openings featuring Indigenous artists, venues with live music, and other celebrations throughout the city.
