Celebrating Christmas in Vail, Colorado (2026)

Snow settles on the rooftops of Vail Village, the covered bridge over Gore Creek glows with Christmas lights, and woodsmoke drifts down the cobbled streets. Few towns in the Colorado Rocky Mountains are as rich in atmosphere this holiday season as Vail, Colorado.

Vail was designed to look like an idyllic European alpine village, and in December that Bavarian styling stops feeling like a theme and starts feeling real. When the mountain slopes open in November and the town is fully decorated in early December, it becomes a true winter wonderland.

If you're planning a Christmas getaway, a spacious vacation rental gives you room to spread out, cook a holiday dinner, and dry gear by the fire between ski days. Browse our Vail and Beaver Creek vacation rentals to find a base close to the slopes.

Here is what to expect from a Vail, Colorado Christmas escape.

What Vail Weather Is Like at Christmas

After shedding its fall colors, Vail transforms into a winter wonderland by December. Average high temperatures of 28°F are expected during the day, with nights dropping to around -4°F by Christmas. Snow falls on roughly eighteen days of the month, so you can expect the weather to be cold, bright, and dry during your stay.

The village sits at 8,150 feet, and that altitude matters more than the temperature. Most visitors feel it on day one as a headache or shortness of breath, but they quickly adapt. It’s wise to drink plenty of water and go easy on drinks the first night.

2026 Christmas Events in Vail

The holiday calendar here starts a little early. Vail Mountain opens on November 13 in 2026, and Beaver Creek follows on November 25, and the Christmas spirit soon follows once the ski resorts are up and running for the season. Here are the events to look out for.

Watch the Tree Lightings in Lionshead and Vail Village

Vail hosts two separate tree lightings, each with a different personality. The Lionshead ceremony lands first, usually the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, with live music near the welcome arch.

The Vail Village lighting follows in early December at the Children's Fountain, on Gore Creek Drive between Pepi's and Lancelot. Carolers work the crowd, Santa makes an appearance, and there’s endless festive spirit.

Shop the Vail Kris Kringle Market

This is the closest thing Colorado has to a true European Christmas market, and it is the single best reason to time your trip for mid-December. Colorado artisans set up along the creek with handmade goods, baked items, and hot glühwein.

Go in the first hour it opens or the last hour before it closes for the most peaceful experience. The middle of the afternoon on a Saturday is shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, particularly around the lovely stalls near the covered bridge.

Catch a Holiday Show at the Vilar Performing Arts Center

The Vilar sits under the plaza in Beaver Creek, about fifteen minutes from Vail, and its December programming is typically magnificent. In 2026, that includes Frisson performing Christmas by Candlelight on December 20 and Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol on December 23.

Both are worth building an evening around. Have dinner in the village first, then walk to the theater.

Ring in New Year's Eve with Torchlight and Fireworks

Vail closes out the year with skiers carrying flares down Golden Peak after dark, followed by fireworks off the mountain. It is the one night the whole town turns out. In fact, it's known as one of the most fun NYE celebrations in Colorado.

The parade itself obviously depends on snow cover and has been called off in lean years, though the fireworks go ahead regardless. You can see them from Vail Village, Golden Peak, Lionshead, and even across the interstate in West Vail.

Other Christmas-Time Things to Do in Vail

The holiday events are the anchor, but most Christmas trips to Vail are spent doing ordinary winter activities, too.

Warm Up with a Hot Chocolate or Festive Drink

Vail runs a Hot Chocolate Trail through the season, and the most iconic stop is the Haute Chocolate served at The Remedy at Four Seasons, a luxury production involving a torched marshmallow.

There’s also an excellent après-ski scene in Vail. Most slopeside bars and lodge patios start filling around three, and on a snowy day there is no better way to warm up after a few hours on the slopes than a fire pit and a warm drink.

Go Ice Skating in the Village

Vail has two outdoor rinks and one indoor rink. Solaris Plaza sits in the heart of Vail Village with heaters around the oval, and Arrabelle Ice Rink at Vail Square in Lionshead lets you skate in a small but pretty rink lined with fairy light.

Dobson Ice Arena is set to reopen in November 2026 after a long renovation, making it the newest and most luxurious ice-skating option. You have to go at least once during your wintertime stay.

Ride the Gondola Up to Eagle's Nest

The Eagle Bahn Gondola out of Lionshead climbs to Eagle's Nest at 10,328 feet. We recommend you ride in the late afternoon if you're after the best scenery.

The view back down the valley at golden hour, with the village lights coming on below the snowy ridgelines, is the best free thing in town. Bring a thermos of hot chocolate from the rental and drink it at the top.

Book a Sleigh Ride Dinner

Bearcat Stables in Edwards runs a horse-drawn sleigh ride followed by a catered dinner, roughly a half-hour drive west of Vail. The sleigh portion runs about 30 minutes, and at the end you’ll return to a cozy cabin for an elevated dinner.

This is a popular experience around Christmas and New Year, so be sure to book well in advance.

Snowshoe or Nordic Ski at the Vail Nordic Center

The Vail Nordic Center runs a groomed seventeen-kilometer trail network at the Vail Golf Club, right in town. It rents snowshoes and Nordic gear, and no prior experience is required.

This is the move on a day when the slopes are packed with holiday crowds. The far end of the network, past the second creek crossing, empties out almost completely for some peace and quiet.

Go Snow Tubing in Wolcott

Vail's own tubing hill at Adventure Ridge closed years ago, but Sage Outdoor Adventures in Wolcott, about 35 minutes west, is the best replacement.

Sessions run from early December through early April in ninety-minute blocks. It is the best outdoor activity here for kids too young for a full day of Colorado skiing.

Tips for Planning Your Vail Christmas Trip

These handy tips can make the difference between a smooth holiday week and a stressful one:

  • Book dining early. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day reservations at the better restaurants fill by late November.
  • Fly into Eagle County Regional Airport if you can. It is about forty minutes out versus two hours from Denver.
  • Skip the rental car if you are staying in the village. The town bus is free and runs constantly between Vail Village and Lionshead.
  • Ski during the first and last hours on holiday weeks. Lift lines at the base peak between 10 AM and 1 PM, so avoid these times for quieter slopes.
  • Build in a rest day. Altitude plus back-to-back ski days catches up with people by day four.
  • Late to planning? Consider the first week of January instead. The village stays decorated, snow is usually better, and the crowds drop off sharply after New Year.

What to Pack for Vail at Christmas

Pack for standing around outside in the evening, not just for skiing. Here’s what not to forget:

  • Insulated waterproof boots with real tread for icy streets.
  • A warm hat and gloves you can wear at the market, separate from ski gloves.
  • Layers you can shed indoors, since restaurants and shops run hot.
  • Sunglasses and high SPF, because alpine sun off fresh powder is brutal.
  • Lip balm and lotion to soothe your skin at altitude.

Christmas in Vail Is Well Worth the Trip

There are few Christmas destinations as magical as Vail. You can enjoy a European alpine town complete with Christmas markets without the effort of flying all the way to Europe. The market is the real thing, the mountain is famous for good reason, and the village at night in December is truly magical.

Give yourself enough days to ski, skate, shop, and sit still for an evening. But first, book your stay with us in one of our Vail vacation rentals and prepare for a Christmas like no other.
